Gibson was the World Series Most Valuable Player in each of the Cardinals' two titles during his tenure. The nine-time All-Star added two Cy Young Awards to his resume. He is a member of the MLB All-Century team and was inducted into the Hall of Fame on his first ballot in 1981.

Following a stellar Legion career in Nebraska, he went on to the University of Nebraska, where he won all of the major collegiate baseball awards and earned a gold medal for the United States at the World University Championship. He went on to be drafted second overall in the MLB Draft and has earned multiple All-Star appearances and Gold Gloves. In addition, he was the 2014 Platinum Glove recipient for best overall defender in the American League.
The Portland, Ore., native was part of four World Series wins with the New York Yankees and another with the Cleveland Indians. The nine-time All-Star won the AL MVP in 1942 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2009.
